Golden Triangle is a century-year-old kitchen design concept that is not just important but also relevant even today. The kitchen is the busiest space of every home. It is essential to make this space as convenient as possible to ease the process of food preparation. It feels good to work in the kitchen where the cooktop/hob, sink and refrigerator are ideally located to ease the flow between the spaces while cooking.

This is the idea that gave rise to this design concept called ‘The Golden Triangle’ or ‘The Work Triangle’.

What is The Golden Triangle?

According to Golden Triangle Concept – The Three Main Working Areas of the Kitchen i.e, The Cooktop, Sink and Refrigerator should be ideally located at the apex points of the triangle.

What is The Minimum and The Maximum Distance to be Maintained between the three points?

Each side of the triangle should be a minimum of 4 feet apart and a maximum of 9 feet apart for the most comfortable flow between the main working areas.

Why this standard dimensions?

It is to make sure that the distance between the two areas is neither too short nor too long. This creates a sophisticated work space in Kitchen.

Note: Make sure you don’t fill up the spaces between the triangle with cabinets or tall unit or pantry unit. This just hinders the actual workspace. Presence of tall unit beside the refrigerator on the other side of the triangle is fine and not otherwise.

Don’t keep the stove and the sink too close or the stove and the refrigerator too close. This only makes the workspace uncomfortable. You need sufficient counter space between the stove, refrigerator and sink to feel comfortable while cooking.

Now let us take a look at the implementation of ‘The Golden Triangle’ concept to the different types of Kitchen Designs.

1. L Shaped Kitchen

As shown in the image above, this is the common type of Kitchen we mostly see in Indian Homes. Here, you shall place the cooktop, refrigerator and the sink in L-Shape with a minimum distance of 4 feet or a maximum distance of 9 feet between each area.

2. The Parallel Kitchen or The Galley Kitchen

The Parallel Kitchen Concept is where the two kitchen platforms run parallel to each other. It is very convenient for compact kitchens where there is a space constraint.

This is how the parallel kitchen has to be designed with stove on one side, the sink and the refrigerator on the other side with a minimum of 4 feet between them. It is better to design it this way because it becomes extremely difficult to cook if the stove is placed in the extreme corners.

3. U-Shaped Kitchen

This is the most convenient kitchen type to accommodate ‘The Golden Triangle’.

The stove, the sink and the refrigerator can be placed in perfect corners of the triangle.
